Santa Catarina Ixtahuacan Preschool (Guatemala)

Scheduled: April 2012

Number of Students 35Village Population 2325

In Nuevo Santa Catarina Ixtahuacan, 40 preschool students are attending class in a kitchen.

Lack of public infrastructure has been a strain in this community, which had to be relocated several times due to both the disastrous Hurricane Mitch in 1998 and sub-surface geological activity that resulted in dangerous geysers (Ixtahuacan translates to “Flower of Water” in the native Quiche).  The unfortunate environmental circumstances surrounding this community have made it difficult to maintain secure infrastructure systems like education.

The preschool students in Santa Catarina do not have a room or building of their own – it is for this reason that they currently occupy the extra room that used to serve as a kitchen for the local primary school.  The preschool director notes that this is far from the ideal learning environment: “As the room is not ours, there are certain activities we cannot do. In addition, the primary school has asked to be able to use the kitchen again and we are concerned that next year we will not have a classroom.”  The director looks forward to the day when they can return the borrowed kitchen to the primary school in exchange for a classroom of their own.

A PoP one-classroom project will solve all of these problems.  The community, already working with PoP on a larger three-room project for the secondary school in Santa Catarina, is quite conscious of how this project would improve the lives of their children.  “For us there is no question,” says the preschool director, “that such a great help to our community requires the full collaboration of everyone who lives here.”
