Lizarco Preschool (Nicaragua)

Scheduled May 2012

Number of Students 53Village Population 180

Just 11km away from the bustling urban center of Matagalpa, lies the community of Lizarco, which sits on the edge of a river.

The community constructed a small provisional preschool classroom made out of adobe brick. However, the structure is in very poor condition. The plastic tarp roof cannot keep out the rain, making it a very uncomfortable learning environment.

Access to the school has been difficult for some community members, including the preschool teacher: “Because I live on the other side of that river, I have to cross it to get to school every day.  When it rains the river is impossible to cross and sometimes I have to cancel class.” The river will be a challenge in construction as well.

The current primary school, constructed over 20 years ago, consists of one small classroom, which is too small to hold all of the 43 primary school students (initial enrollment was 50 students). The teachers claim that lack of accessibility and a poor infrastructure probably contributed to a drop in attendance last year.

The community is enthusiastic to build the two new classrooms, and PoP hopes to help them improve their learning environment by also providing them with some desks for the children and teachers, and to repair their latrines. In the future, PoP hopes to help them find aid to create water infrastructure and build a kitchen, as they currently cook all food for the children outdoors over a fire.
