Towards our
goal of building sustainable education for
this village

Laguna Seca Preschool (Nicaragua)
Scheduled April 2012
In the heart of Nicaragua’s coffee country, the community of Laguna Seca sits next to what was once a pristine lagoon–now a dried out basin–where the community gets its name.
The majority of the population of Laguna Seca work 6 days a week, earning minimum wage ($23 USD per month) at the nearby “beneficios” or coffee processing plants. Because of the lack of economic opportunities, this community has worked hard over the years to provide a decent education for their children.
Before there was a school, the community mobilized to dig out and level the land to build the current school with the few materials they had. The preschool class currently meets in a rustic brick building with a dirt floor and partially exposed roof that is on the same site as the existing primary school. The community remains very actively involved and has already formed a Promise Committee to start constructing their new preschool. PoP is also hoping to connect their community with other organizations to help them dig a well for their school and community.
