In a village that has never received any outside help, the new PoP preschool joins the community-built and supported primary school.
There is a small, run-down building next to the primary school in Phik Nyai; it appears to be on its last legs. The first time we visited we asked the teachers what it was used for and, frankly, we were shocked to hear the answer: The teacher’s office.
In many villages, the teacher’s office is one of the most kempt areas of a school, a source of pride even. But here, in Phik Nyai, the priority quite clearly went to someone else: The students.
From that first observation, every interaction with the educators, students and villagers in Phik Nyai has reaffirmed for us that this is a place that cares deeply about providing a promising future for its youth.
Together we built a one and a half rooms structure that is providing a classroom for first-time preschoolers and adequate space for this rock star group of teachers.
