Na Mai Preschool (Laos)

A project to formalize early education in a Lao mountain village.

Before we ever arrived in Na Mai, something very cool was happening: Education was a village-wide priority.

Over two years ago the villagers of Na Mai got together and decided that the reason their students were falling behind in primary school was because they lacked a preschool education. So they stepped into action. In a small outdoor space between the two primary structures, they created a makeshift class.

The ground was dirt and the roof was a patched together tarp. Materials and furniture were lacking. But education was present everywhere. In the alphabet cards taped to the primary schools exterior wall. In the hanging artwork of their youngest students. In the commitment to attendance.

They pulled together their resources to build an official school with PoP and formalize early learning. Now that is what we call commitment.
