Towards our
goal of building sustainable education for
this village

El Cacao High School (Nicaragua)
Open: November 2011
Once a sleepy farm community overlooking the mountains of Dario, the community of El Cacao and its 13 surrounding communities have now become one of the fastest growing locations in the region.
The need for rural students to complete a high school education has become even more of a priority as the community of El Cacao struggles to produce decent-paying jobs for their already unemployed and underemployed population. The community is well aware of this necessity as reflected by the growing enrollment over the past 12 years at the local high school, Instituto Carlos Santi.
Given the need for more classroom space, the old high school had resorted to dividing two of the classrooms with a plywood partition wall to provide space for the fourth and fifth year students. The already cramped principal’s office served as a space for teachers to prep for classes and house the school library. Even though the school had been well cared for, it could no longer support a high quality-learning environment for the growing student population.
The community of El Cacao and its surrounding communities were excited to start building two additional classrooms for their school. This project represents much more than just a new school. As the town construction committee stated in their solicitation: “We say that knowledge is power. If Nicaragua is going to move forward, modernization needs to reach the countryside. It is true that there is not much work apart from being a peasant farmer in the countryside, but there is opportunity in the city. The more that students and others can prepare, the more likely they are to have a healthier, safer and peaceful future.”
This project was conducted in partnership with Seeds of Learning.
