Towards our
goal of building sustainable education for
this village

El Blandón Primary School (Nicaragua)
Open: March 2010
The school in El Blandón sits on the top of a hill, surrounded by five different neighborhoods.
It is located about one kilometer west of the center of Ciudad Darío and about a five-minute drive from our partner organization, Seeds of Learning’s offices and Learning Resource Center. Every year, the number of children from these five neighborhoods registering for classes at the El Blandon school grows. The school’s three existing small classrooms are not nearly enough to support the 204 preschool and primary school students that attend school daily. The building also serves as a space for adult education, literacy courses, workshops, community meetings and the distribution of medical vaccines.
SOL and PoP worked to expand the existing structure with two additional classrooms to accomodate the students. During construction, the local community was more active than most. The parents and teacher’s committee pitched into organize the donation of all the bricks and several other building materials for the project and skilled laborers from the community lent their expertise allowing the construction project to move much faster than typical building projects. An energetic group of older students also assisted construction on a regular basis—building the newly constructed classroom they now learn in every day.
Nowadays, the children of Barrio San José are excited to have a highly improved school and proud to have been part of the construction of these two wonderful, bright and roomy classrooms in the middle of their community. The school’s teachers and students are now part of SOL’s Sister School program. One of the teachers took advantage of a special three month SOL course on presenting traditional and folkloric dance in the classroom. A few months later, she co-presented this material at a seminar for over 80 of her fellow teachers.
It is wonderful to see how the laying of a few bricks and mortar can spark a new enthusiasm for learning.
This project was completed through our partnership with Seeds of Learning.
