Towards our
goal of building sustainable education for
this village

Chuchexic (Guatemala)
Open: January 2012
“Education is the key to our survival,” says Jose Antonio, coordinator for the Guatemalan Ministry of Education and native-born Chuchexic resident.
In fact, it was Jose Antonio who first brought us to his community and introduced us to the numerous problems plaguing the villages’ joint primary and secondary school. “When I was a child, this is where I went to school. Now my children go here. I fear that my grandchildren will not be so lucky.” Unfortunately, his concerns were all too real. The school was operating out of three makeshift classrooms, two of which doubled as storage rooms, leaving only a marginal space for school equipment, learning materials, and the students themselves.
To elevate their concern, the student population of Chuchexic was growing at an exponential rate and by the 2012 school year there would be 60 students without a classroom. “As you can see, there is no room to build anymore classrooms, be them permanent or provisional,” remarked Jose Antonio.
PoP recognized the educational challenges facing Chuchexic and, in collaboration with members from the community, formulated a plan to address multiple needs. Reinforced classrooms, built to support a second floor, not only provide the community with new classrooms to replace unsafe structures but produce the extra space required to accommodate Chuchexic’s ever-increasing student population.
