Xolcaja Primary School (Guatemala)

Broke Ground: January 2012

The weather is hot and the air humid and sticky.

The students arrive to school early in the morning, their sandal clad feet caked with mud. But the children of Xolcaja seemingly never stop smiling. They are proud to be students and appreciate the opportunity to learn. The leaders and parents of the community have recognized this and with the minimal amount of resources available to them, have built provisional classes to meet their growing educational needs. Though these rooms have been constructed of tin with floors of nothing more than the bare earth upon which they were built, community members are still thankful that their children have a place to attend classes. However, they are not complacent. Over the past seven years they have been searching for assistance to improve their situation.

Easily one of our most active communities to date, Xolcaja is working hard to collaborate with Pencils of Promise to bring improved education to their community. With an enthusiastic director who works all hours to support her students and the school in which they are housed, Xolcaja will soon have brand new classrooms that are comfortable, safe and will serve them for decades to come.
