Towards our
goal of building sustainable education for
this village

Xeabaj II (Guatemala)
Scheduled: February 2012
Through steep hills and majestic mountains we find this humble community surrounded by cornfields, dirt roads, and children’s smiling faces covered in mud.
The village is made up of 150 families, many who have close to 5 or 6 children each. Their modest earnings and large families have exacerbated the community’s educational needs. The primary school is situated at the summit of Xeabaj’s main street and has two provisional classrooms. The community built these temporary structures; one is made of sheet metal and the other of adobe. The adobe structure, a traditional rural Guatemalan technique, is purely mud and not conducive for a sanitary learning environment. While the Xeabaj community has a wide variety of needs, there focus is on improving educational standards for their children’s future.
Xeabaj’s enthusiasm upon our visits is always impressive. In between hidden smiles, the village members are always present and many shining in their beautiful colors of their handmade traditional garments. The beauty of this community is not only seen in their colorful Mayan outfits but also in their passion to work with PoP to improve the learning possibilities for the children of the community.
