Towards our
goal of building sustainable education for
this village

Pasin Primary School (Guatemala)
Broke Ground: January 2012
Driving into the small rural village of Pasin, our car is immediately swarmed by droves of smiling, energetic children.
In an area where people tend to be reserved and somewhat timid, the children in Pasin are the exception that proves the rule. It is no wonder, then, that the parents of this community have worked so hard to provide their vibrant children with the education they so badly desire. But this has been no easy feat.
Not since 1978 has the community of Pasin received assistance from the government to support their education infrastructure. The few cement block classrooms they have are slowly beginning to fall apart, leaving holes in the roof and cracks in the exterior walls. In addition, to support the growing educational demand, the community has constructed six classrooms made of pure wood, all with dirt floors. Without windows or electricity, the rooms remains dark and dank, with only light coming from cracks between the wooden planked walls to guide their studies. Unfortunately, with this light also enters rainwater, turning dirt into mud and creating unsanitary conditions.
But the people of Pasin remain optimistic. Evident by their participation in PoP’s community engagement workshop and the rapidity in which they collected their contributions. They have already organized their workers proving that enthusiasm and a commitment to education will carry this PoP project through to the end.
