Houay Khang Dormitory (Laos)
Broke Ground: October 2011
The Houay Khang dormitory for boys and girls will help provide clean, safe and accessible housing to 100+ high school students.
Houay Khang secondary school educates over 300 children; roughly half of those students need to stay on campus because their homes are too far away. Yet as of now, the on-campus housing not enough. In fact, it’s not even close.
In these makeshift homes there are many issues: personal safety risks, lack of sanitary hygiene area, and improper ventilation for cooking. For parents, the potential dangers of sending their sons and daughters to live in unsafe housing away from home are enough to keep them out of school. While the students come from 11 different villages and should yield very high enrollment numbers, many of them don’t go.
The educators at Houay Khang have requested clean, safe and accessible housing for their students. They are sure, as are we, that it will help bring and keep students in school.
The PoP Laos team can’t wait to do this project with the students and community and Houay Khang – and we can’t wait to see the impact it will yield.
