PoP Summer White Party: Thanks for your support!

Written by: Adam Braun August 16th, 2010
The success of this year’s Summer White Party at The Hudson Terrace was apparent to all guests and the volunteer “stars” that put on the event. It was impossible not to notice the overwhelming support from a sold out crowd of over 400 guests who showed up in their best whites. From creative costumes to those dressed to impress, the crowd was in the most colorful white attire I had ever seen. Before the event, I thought last year’s Summer White Party would be tough to outshine, but we did it this year thanks to everyone who came out.
It was a night to remember. For starters, the venue was impeccable with overreaching high ceilings and glorious chandeliers- hosting an indoor and outdoor bar for all guests.  DJ Tom kept our energy high all night with popular mixes in pop, dance, and hip hop music. Our bar sponsors kept the open bar promise with Vita Coco and Vitamin Water to cool us down on the terrace and summer cocktail concoctions from Bulldog Gin like lychee gin martinis and gin lemonades. Let’s not forget the more than enough Beer Lao, Korbin Kameron wines, and Johnnie Walker Black and Red to add to the festivities. In between cheers, guests shared White Castle burgers, a tradition for a PoP Summer White Party, and POP CHIPS. We also began a fun activity called Pass the Pencil Movement. Our famous oversized Pencil was given to guests as a symbolic representation of the PoP Movement: A Pencil Transforms, and after taking a photo with the pencil, they were asked to pass it to the next person!
There were other ways guests were able to help the cause during night. Stations were set up for participation in the various activities at the event such as raffles, door prizes, Tshirts, Nick Onken Photography, and The Village Rally. These simple small gestures collectively made a big impact for the organization. It was an empowering night indeed.
Pencils of Promise raised over $29,000 in total proceeds to go towards building new projects between Laos and Nicaragua, in addition to implementing sustainability programs in our schools. After giving a heart-felt personal speech, Adam Braun, founder of Pencils of Promise, launched a new donor program called The Honor Roll.  The Honor Roll is a list of donors that are looking for a partnership with Pencils of Promise. Each donor’s annual pledge (in whatever amount they believe they can commit) will go towards sustaining the projects that we build after the four walls go up. For approximately $500 per year ($40/month) we can provide each school with the necessary supplies and teachers to further the development of the children. Donors on The Honor Roll will be given personal updates to each project and be a member of the community abroad. $8,000 was raised from the launch of The Honor Roll. Thank you to all who pledged!
One of the coolest moments in the night was after we made speeches, a young lady approached me and said that she was the ex-girlfriend of our first website developer! She had been invited through a friend and thought it was such a great cause.  She then realized after watching our video and hearing more about the organization, it was the same organization her ex-boyfriend volunteered to work with last year. This was exactly one year ago we celebrated the first launch of a website for Pencils of Promise at the first ever Summer White Party. Boy, have we come a long way!
Thank you again to each and every person who has joined The PoP Movement. It’s an amazing thing to know that we can make a difference in other people’s lives. If you were not able to attend this year’s Summer White Party, we will see you next year! Check out our website for upcoming news and events. The next Pencils of Promise event is scheduled for November 2010.
Professional photos from The Summer White Party night will be uploaded to our Events section soon. Please check back soon!
