FIRST PoP VOLUNTEER NIGHT OF 2012!
Written by: Team PoP January 27th, 2012
This past Wednesday, over 35 students came to our office for a PoP Volunteer Night! One of our amazing PoP high school interns, Victoria Li, shares her thoughts on the night…
Wednesday, January 25th was the first PoP Volunteer Night of 2012! The office was packed with supporters who came to help out. We all came from a variety of places. I am the President of the Bronx High School of Science Key Club, a service club, and was able to bring several Key Clubbers. The school president of the Flushing High School heard about PoP from her advisor and attended the PoP Leadership Institute (PLI) this past summer. She brought a large group and really showed how much awareness one person can spread. Other high school students heard about PoP from an online article or from their friends who intern at PoP. Not only did high school students attend, but there were also college students. One college student who attended is part of the Millennium Campus Network, whose founder actually spoke at our PLI speaker series. Another heard about PoP from Fashion’s Night Out through the benefit PoP put on with Dolce & Gabbana. We even had a college professor among us!

PoP supporters range in age and came from all over the New York City area to get to know one another. One of the activities we played was “Two Truths and One Lie.” Even though there were so many people, everyone had a chance to say their two truths and one lie while writing donor letters and making Spanish alphabet worksheets for the students in Guatemala. We got some interesting truths and lies such as: I have a dollar in my pocket, I got lost coming to the PoP office, I don’t like chocolate, and I have a tuna sandwich in my briefcase. Here is your chance to figure out which ones are true and or false.
In the end, we wrote stacks of donor letters and Spanish alphabet worksheets while socializing with a diverse group of PoP supporters. If you like what you read, stay tuned for future PoP Volunteer Nights!
